Program Details

For all levels of yoga experience (min. 6 months).

Led by orthopedic surgeon Ray Long and digital illustrator Chris Macivor, this highly interactive workshop involves a blend of Western scientific concepts applied to hatha yoga poses. Illustrations of the human body are projected in 3-D onto a large screen to illustrate the major posture categories. Questions are encouraged throughout the workshop. Areas of focus include

  • An overview of the spinal-cord reflexes related to yoga
  • The musculoskeletal system, including bones, joints, ligaments, and muscles
  • The cardiovascular and respiratory systems dynamically experienced through asana and pranayama.

Eight different categories of poses are explored in depth: Sun Salutations, standing poses, forward bends, hip openers, twists, backbends, arm balances, and inversions. Each category includes a mini-practice with relaxation, and one or two poses are analyzed in detail, including their therapeutic applications and adjustments. This weekend includes a full class of standing poses designed to awaken awareness of the psoas muscle.
