TangoZen™ is an innovative yet natural way of meditating—while dancing the tango! Zen teaches us to devote 100 percent of our attention to the here and now. In this program we will explore traditional tango while experiencing total concentration on dancing. To accomplish this, you will be guided in a number of fundamental exercises closely linked to tango dance movements, borrowed from martial arts such as tai chi and qigong. Together with other techniques adapted from yoga, these exercises will help you

  • Learn body-mind awareness
  • Recognize the importance of connection with your partner
  • Be sensitive to the music
  • Appreciate your surroundings and other dancers as you dance.

As you practice these exercises over time, you will gain increased sensitivity to balance, connection, centering, groundedness, and weight shifting, all of which are critical for tango dancing.

Recommended reading Chan Park, Tango Zen: Walking Dance Meditation (Tango Zen House) and Shunryu Suzuki, Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind, (Weatherhill).

Note Wear comfortable clothes and socks or flat-bottomed shoes for morning classes. For afternoon classes and evening practices sessions, leather-soled shoes are recommended.
