Vishal Vaid has trained in ghazal (a song form that means “to hold conversation with the divine”) since he was three years old. His studies allowed him to fall in love with two identities, Eastern and Western, ancient and contemporary. He writes: “When I’m singing ghazal, sometimes, just sometimes, I’m transported back to the streets of thirteenth-century Lucknow. But most of the time I’m walking down Second Avenue, hearing the sounds of New York City.” He has performed throughout the world, appearing on television shows in New York, London, India, and Morocco, recording and performing with Anoushka Shankar, Michael Franti, and Karsh Kale.
