Yoga: Cross Training for Life with Nina Beucler and April Hand
As a jazzercise teacher for 16 years, Nina Beucler lived in nearly constant pain and developed bone spurs on her cervical spine. Working in high-stress jobs, including financial management for a Fortune 500 company, aggravated April Hand's shoulder injury to the point where she was forced to take 3200 milligrams of ibuprofen daily. It was their discovery of yoga that healed both women, who are now certified Kripalu Yoga teachers, and they've created TLC Yoga as a way to spread yoga in the world and help people incorporate new ways of breathing and moving into their lives off the mat. Their 65-minute DVD, Yoga: Cross Training for Life, guided with clear, straightforward language, is a fabulous introduction to yoga and includes postures, restorative poses, and a savasana.
Being Light with Betsy Light
"There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground," wrote the Sufi poet Rumi. There are nearly as many ways to experience the freedom and serenity of meditation, which Kripalu Yoga teacher Betsy Light describes on this CD as "a way of coming home to who you are, a way of opening the door to a clear, understanding mind and a spacious, compassionate heart." Betsy offers a wide variety of meditation practices on this CD, which features an accompanying score by Mark Kelso based on the melody of the So'Ham mantra. Practitioners can choose between a breath awareness practice, meditation with a focus on the third eye, heart-center meditation, Tratak (candle-gazing), and mantra chanting. The CD also includes 20 minutes of delicious guided relaxation. Order at susanbetsylight@hotmail.com.
Healing Yoga for Every Body with Karen O'Donnell Clarke
The wandering notes of Marina Raye's transporting flute music on this CD are the first cues to the body and mind to give in and let go. The rest of the job is aptly done by Kripalu Yoga teacher and Integrative Yoga therapist Karen Clarke (read her article on page 6), whose specific yet unobtrusive guidance takes you on a journey to deep relaxation. Inspired by a friend of Karen's who lost much of her independent movement due to multiple sclerosis, the CD is designed for all levels of ability and includes a body scan, 20 minutes of gentle movements that can be done in a chair or on the floor, pranayama, meditations, and a 17-minute yoga nidra. The experience is designed to flow from one section to the next, but practitioners can also select different parts of the practice to fit their mood or time frame. Stillpoint Yoga with Janet Crump: Gentle/Beginner and Dynamic/Intermediate
