I truly enjoyed the Kripalu Aromatherapy massage. The massage itself was more rhythmic and gentle than other massages I’ve had—a perfectly relaxing way to end a hectic day. I was impressed by the therapist’s skill at identifying essential oils that would be both helpful and soothing for my experience. Read more.

After discussing my preferences on various scents, my therapist shared which oils are best for stress relief, detoxing, relaxation, etc. To meet my personal needs, she recommended a mix of grapefruit, ylang ylang, and rosemary to relieve my stiff muscles and release stress and tension, and lavender for relaxation.

Once the oils were ready, the therapist tied a tissue dabbed with the oils to the massage table, just below my nose, so I could receive the calming benefits of inhaling the oils while they were being applied to my skin. The experience allowed me to slow down and be in the moment, to let go of the stress of the work day. I smiled with each pleasantly deep breath, and the skillful use of the essential oils was an added benefit to my massage—it made for a truly therapeutic experience.

Stone Therapy Massage

Warm volcanic stones are massaged over the entire body to promote physical and spiritual balancing by using the energies of the therapeutic stones to relax the body at its deepest level. This ancient healing treatment moves energy to depleted areas, relieves sore muscles, and produces a soothing and meditative state of peace, calm, and balance.
90 minutes: $180

Before my session began, my therapist asked me how my body was feeling and what it needed. It had been a stressful week. I was in the process of moving and had recently been in a car accident. My body was feeling tense.

She began the session by placing “resting stones” on and under my body, on specific acupressure and major chakra points, drawing circulation and energy to those areas—immediately beginning the relaxation, detoxification, and healing processes in those tissues and centers, and prepping the area for massage.

Stones were placed on acupressure points for the lungs, their weight on my chest heavy at first. But the heat and the pressure became very relaxing. The gentle warmth there calmed my breath.

The therapist massaged each part of my body, first with her hands, and then with warm stones, then cold stones, and back to warm. The cold stones on my warmed skin had a refreshing feel. The finish with warm stones was soothing. When the stones were removed, I could feel more than just the weight of the stones being lifted from my body.

At the end of the session, I felt relaxed and rejuvenated. No more tension. This was exactly what I needed.

Please wear loose, comfortable clothing.
50 minutes: $80; 80 minutes: $130

I’d never tried positional therapy before, and didn’t know much about the practice, but after just one session, I now know this: I. Love. Positional. Therapy.

I learned so much during the conversational 50-minute session. Therapist Lee Albert showed me how off balance my hips were and not only helped me bring them back into alignment, but also explained how I could do so on my own, and why the method works. He also explained what kind of physical health issues I might run into later in life because of my poor hip alignment if I don’t tend to it.

Kripalu’s approach to positional therapy is unique because Lee uses his own protocol and wellness plan to accompany the practice. One of the most interesting things I learned was that I’d been wrong about assuming that tension and tight muscles meant that I needed to stretch and massage those muscles loose. Quite often that isn’t the case. In fact, sometimes muscles can become over stretched, and many of the positions Lee taught me were geared toward creating slack in the muscle, allowing them to go back to their original, neutral position.

The keyword throughout the session was simplicity. By easing my limbs into the most simple and comfortable of positions, my muscles were able to relax. The most impressive thing to me was the immediacy of the results. Minutes after the simplest of stretches and positions, I was feeling instant and dramatic results. In addition to specific positions that relieved pain, he taught me that by simply changing the way I sit at my desk, drive my car, lie in bed, I could relive the muscle pain and tension I’d always felt in my body.

I left the session with a personalized plan of practices to keep my muscles feeling good. Now, I practice what I learned during the session every single day.
