Turning Point: Sharon Salzberg

Sharon Salzberg I teach and write about awareness meditation and the intensive cultivation of loving-kindness and compassion.

KOL Tell us about a turning point in your life.
Sharon I met my teacher, Dipa-ma, in the early 1970s. She had suffered a lot (losing two children, and then her husband quite suddenly) and was an incredible model of the ability to transform even awful personal suffering into great love and compassion.

KOL What do you love about teaching?
Sharon I love the people who come to classes and retreats: their sincerity, their courage, and their breadth of life experiences. I always learn a lot!

KOL What are you passionate about right now?
Sharon Social change in the United States—working to help this society become more inclusive, equitable, and just. And helping care for caregivers—those who, personally or professionally, are taking care of others.

KOL What do you do in your downtime?
Sharon Political volunteering and studying politics and different visions of political action. Also sleep.
