Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health is a nonprofit, tax-exempt, charitable organization pursuant to Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Incorporated and formerly based in Pennsylvania, Kripalu is now headquartered in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, and is registered in Massachusetts as a public charity.
Like most nonprofits, Kripalu is governed by a self-perpetuating Board of Trustees that is independent of management. The Board holds at least three regular meetings per year, overseen by a trustee who serves as Chair. Trustees serve for up to three terms of three years. New trustees are selected based upon their commitment to Kripalu’s mission; their professional skills, expertise and willingness to serve; and the financial resources, contacts and other resources they can bring to bear on furthering Kripalu’s mission.
The Board hires a Chief Executive Officer, who in turn hires management and staff. In 2011, the Board hired Kripalu’s current Chief Executive Officer, David Surrenda, Ph.D. David is a longtime innovator, entrepreneur, and specialist in integrating holistic principles into the workplace. He has been Director of the Leadership Edge since 1987, a consulting firm specializing in the challenges of executive leadership in the private, non-profit, and public sectors. An early advocate for whole-person education informed by spiritual values, David was the founding Dean of the Graduate School of Holistic Studies at John F. Kennedy University in California from 1977–1985.
